Janet Laurence in 'Life in your hands: art from solastalgia' at Object Gallery
17 November – 22 December 2012

Life in Your Hands: art from solastalgia champions visual art, craft and design as an enabling force to combat solastalgia. For the project, artists were selected from across Australia to undertake direct research with communities identified as suffering solastalgia, the phenomenon identified by Prof. Glenn Albrecht as ‘the homesickness you have when you haven’t left home.’ Through their work, the artists provided communities with a voice and an avenue of personal action, commenting on, recreating and forging new links, where communication had been lost. The resulting artworks comprise jewellery, ceramics, textiles, photography, video and installation, are at once optimistic of the future, and provide a cautionary note of the consequences if action is not taken.
