BREENSPACE presented the work of Joyce Hinterding at the 2011 edition of VOLTA NY, which took place during Armory Arts week from Thursday 3 March – Sunday 6 March 2011 at Stand D1, 7 West 34th Street, New York City.

Joyce Hinterding installed a large, site-specific wall-based drawing, as an extension to her ongoing series Fields and Loops. This drawing, took the form of a fractal antenna, literally 'drawing' energy from the critical mass of electromagnetic signals from the local environment, fed it into a sound system, making audible the energies emitted around us.

Field and Loops challenges our thoughts about representation, functionality and energy scavenging while evidencing the local fields and contributing to the site-specific and dynamic aural landscape that is being generated literally out of thin air.

Joyce Hinterding has been curated into international biennales and exhibitions including Istanbul Biennial; Bienal de Sao Paulo; Biennale of Sydney; Biennial of San Jose; MCA Taiwan; MCA Sydney; AGNSW, Sydney; and ACMI, Melbourne.

VOLTA NY is the American incarnation of the successful young fair founded in Basel in 2005. VOLTA NY was conceived to continue the original mandate to create a tightly-focused, boutique event that is a place for discovery and a showcase for current art production and relevant contemporary positions — regardless of the artist or gallery’s age. VOLTA NY is an invitational show, that was organised by Art Critic and Fair Director, Amanda Coulsen. By putting the focus back on artists through exclusively featuring solo projects, VOLTA NY promotes a deep exploration of the work of its selected projects, an opportunity for discoveries that move beyond those afforded by a traditional art fair. The 2011 edition of VOLTA NY saw the return of BREENSPACE, the first Australian gallery to ever participate in this selective art fair.
