The prize will be held at the National Art School in Darlinghurst. Debra Phillips will show a selection of work from The roundest object in the world series. John Tonkin will exhibit a new interactive video system titled Surface, that explores ideas of interiority and presence. It responds to the viewer’s proximity to the screen, locating them within a kind of first-person temporal play, that mirrors our fragmented engagement with the world. By moving in front of the work the viewer is able to navigate through underwater spaces and momentarily surface into small moments of everyday lived experience.
